Even ,helmets, well past the 5 year replacement date will provide some protection, but since it may not provide the same protection as based on DOT standards, ,helmet, manufacturers must recommend replacement. And I'm sure there's a calculated grace time added to it just to be safe. It could probably go well beyond that without failure.
